Description

Hello fellow Astrobinners .... I have been trying to  image the Sun ... well a bit of it

I bought a Solar Scout back in 2019 and had a couple of goes at imaging the Sun with very little success ... and the Sun was very inactive so not much to see

I became discouraged and gave up - my best effort from that time is posted on here and looks like a half a dodgy orange

Given things have started to "hot up" with the Sun getting into a more active phase of the 11 year cycle I thought I would try again

I was extremely delighted with the views through the eyepiece - saw great surface detail and prominences - had all the family take a look wow moments all round

Imaging on the other hand .... extremely frustrating but have made some progress

I remembered focusing was a major issue when I first tried in 2019n so I invested in the DeepSky Dad autofocus kit for the Solar Scout which attached with little difficulty

I got an ZWO ASI 120MM-S as camera , yet more 20m powered USBs so I can control from inside the house, watched loads of you tube videos and thought "I am ready to go!"

Being the British summer there have only been a couple of really clear weekend days when i thought it was worth having a go  the 16th July being the third one

I thought the session was very unsuccessful like the previous two , so much so that I didn't try processing the data

Being very bored last night as cloudy I thought i would look through the data and found one run that would actually stack and was in some sort of focus

This is the result which is alot better than my first go posted on here but far from perfect I know

My main challenges remain

1. Getting consistent good focus - I don't find the focus aids in SharpCap to be much help and am obviously pants doing it by eye
2. Getting rid of Newtons rings ... I have reduced them by applying maximum lift and then applying flats but was rather they weren't there at all! the flats method stops working if you adjust focus
3. Get to learn how to use SharpCap and Autostakkert properly

I may try another camera with bigger sensor so can get more / the whole disc and see if that makes things any easier

Any hints and tips very welcome !
